Unhappy fish – the story of intensive fish farming

Over 40% of fish we consume comes from fish farms. Intensive fish farming makes fish obese, stressed out and prone to illness. Furthermore, while killing standards exist for animal farming, equivalent standards for fish in aquaculture are lagging behind.

The ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) label is meant to improve the quality of life of the farmed fish and demonstrate to the consumer that the fish has been farmed responsibly.

What opportunities does the ASC label provide? What improvements and innovations should the aquaculture sector consider? Can we move to ‘Free Range Fish’?
