Friday night, movie night
Art can transform people. That was the powerful message of the movie Waste Land. The film follows the artist Vik Muniz on his quest to help the garbage pickers of Jardim Gramacho. His mission is personal as he grew up poor himself and having become quite successful, he wants to return something to society.
The setting for the movie was perfect. All seats and some of the floor space were taken. Together with some drinks and bites the movie set off. As we followed Vik Muniz and the participating pickers we came to know these pickers. Not just as people who happened to be working on a garbage belt, but also how circumstances drove them here. Some were proud, others wanted to leave as soon as possible.
In the end it turned out into an uplifting story how by comparison small initiatives can make a difference for a large group of people.
